Tryouts
From: John Guy, BHC President Subject: Tryouts and Team Selection
Now that the Tryout Process has begun there is a lot of excitement as players look forward to the upcoming season with their new teams, coaches and teammates.
Some of you may be disappointed with your particular team placement. Please know that the BHC has worked diligently to provide a system that combines objective skills assessment (using inside and outside evaluators) along with the subjective process where Level Directors and Coaches use these assessments to form competitive teams across all levels to ensure a fun and productive experience for all players.
Growing up in Florida my favorite team was the Miami Dolphins. This was the era of Minnesota’s “Purple People Eaters”, Pittsburgh’s “Steel Curtain Defense” and “Broadway Joe” Namath of the Jets. The Dolphins? – They had the “No Name Defense” a collection of unknown guys who were excited about playing football in the NFL.
Mike “Captain Krunch” Kolen played his college football as a linebacker at Auburn and was looking forward to playing in the NFL even though he was drafted by the lowly Dolphins. He joined this collection of other unknowns who all shared the same commitment to working and playing together as a Team. Mike spent his entire NFL career with the Dolphins (1970 – 1977) as an outside linebacker on the “No Name Defense”.
During his career in Miami the Dolphins won two Super Bowls and became the only team in NFL history to go undefeated and untied in the 1972 season (17 – 0). Mike told me that their commitment to working together is probably the thing they are proudest of, as it allowed them to accomplish more than they ever dreamed.
No matter what team you make this season take the opportunity to join with your Coaches and Teammates to working and playing TOGETHER this year both on and off the ice. Commit yourself to improving your hockey skills and supporting your team.
And Remember: LET’S HAVE FUN!
I look forward to seeing all of you at the rink this season.
Best Regards,
John
